The Author's Struggle: Dealing with Writer's Block

O hai everyone! It's Moorea again, and I'm back to help with author's struggles. Today, we're tackling another ridiculously aggravating topic that often crops up during writing...drumroll please... WRITER'S BLOCK.

Writer's block is described as several things (my little brother says "it's god awful"...haha); most people describe it as that feeling where you're trying to write something, and no matter what, you just can't seem to string those words together. It's often made me throw my pencil across the room in frustration and anger. And that's completely normal, too.

As I've said before, if you have writer's block:
1. Try listening to some music (and hey, dancing and singing along help me).
2. Walk away, have a cookie, and go back to it later.
3. Call up your friend and laugh like you'll die tomorrow and this is your last chance to laugh.
4. If you have a pet, play with it. If you have a fish, watch it swim (just don't press your nose against the glass..you'll make it flip out). If you don't have either, annoy/play with your sibling. If you don't have any of those, go exercise.
5. Jump around and spaz out.
6. Look up "Scarlet Takes A Tumble" on Youtube and click the first video.
7. Do something FUN.

It will eventually leave you, so don't fret. And remember: good writers are hard to find. If you're reading this, you're probably one of them.

The Author's Struggle: Getting a Start

Hi everyone. I'm Moorea, and I'm a teen author-in-the-making. I'm currently in the process of writing a novel, and I find that more often than not I have some kind of rant about trying to write a novel. In my blog, I'll be ranting a lot (sorry ;)) and giving you tips, ideas, rules, and what to avoid when you're trying to write a novel.

Rule #1: You have to want to do this. The road is long and hard and rocky. Writing a novel is not something that can be done in five minutes. If you're serious about doing this, the first thing is to find out what kind of book you want to write.

How to Start: There are several book genres out there. The book I'm writing has a mix (which you can do) of romance and the supernatural. It's your book, so you can do anything with it. I find that the easiest way to start is to LET it come to you, not wrack your brains and avoid your homework until you have an idea. Seriously, that might sound a little cheesy, but it does work. I was sitting in class in September 2009 and all of a sudden I thought, 'I'm going to write a romance/supernatural story.' And I pulled up Microsoft Word and began writing. Having the "write" idea (sorry, couldn't resist) will take some time, so don't call yourself a terrible writer and a failure when in fact you haven't even started your book.

Rule #2: THIS WILL BE FRUSTRATING. Many times I've slammed my laptop lid shut and stormed around, suffering from writer's block. The best way(s) to deal with this is/are: do something involving physical activity (this forces you to focus on something else until you calm down); listen to music (song lyrics help me overcome writer's block); or forget about it. Writer's block will eventually leave you, and you will be able to write again.

That's all I have to offer right now, hope this helped aspiring writers ;)
